The Met Gala is fashion’s actual night out as designers and celebrities come together to kick off the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s yearly Costume Institute exhibit. This year’s theme, Punk: Chaos to Couture, brought the stars out in their own personal interpretations of the rocker aesthetic.
Let’s see who got in the spirit, who brought it, and who tried their best to no avail.

And the last shall be first… Beyoncé, one of the event’s chairs, arrived later in the evening, retroactively setting a tone of fabulosity in this custom Givenchy printed gown and thigh high boots.
Upon that train, the girls were slain.
Jennifer Lopez also brought it, as she always does, in a custom black leopard sequin-embroidered Michael Kors gown. The dress is nice enough, but her hair truly sets everything off. Hot!
Miranda Kerr was also outfitted in Michael Kors, specifically a custom black crepe gown with a paillette bandeau. A Christian Louboutin spiked clutch added a punk edge to her look.
Joan Smalls arrived on the arm of Tom Ford, smoldering in one of his black lace creations. Authorities were unable to locate any identifiable flaw. Hot!
Nicole Richie‘s twist on the theme was predictably genius. The designer rocked a Topshop high neck long sleeve column gown with a vintage silver Maria Francesca Pepe ring. The cropped white ‘do just brings it to the next level. Perfect execution! Certainly a ‘best dressed’ nominee, no? Hot!
A Riccardo Tisci-clad Kanye West could at least smile with his eyes this year, as baby mama Kim Kardashian was permitted to attend the event. Kimmy kept to the theme, channeling (saftey) pin cushion couture in a bespoke Givenchy gown. Hmmm…not feeling the floral. What do you think?
Amaré Stoudemire offset a Calvin Klein Collection suit with a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors. FiancéAlexis Welch dressed her burgeoning baby bump in a feathered Giambattista Valli number. Hmmm, Alexis is glowing, but I’m not sure this was the most flattering choice.
Jessica Alba was positively ladylike in a laser cut leather Tory Burch look. It’s a beautiful dress, but Jessica always looks so sweet. I’d wish she’d punked it out and toughened up her look a little bit– just for tonight, at least!
Heidi Klum also went for a traditionally elegant look in an ivory piece by Marchesa. Beautiful, but safe.
Coco Rocha went with a slick leopard print moth-embellished gown from Emanuel Ungaro by Fausto Puglisi. Hot! Feral! I’m digging the bangs!

Event co-chair Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy posed with co-chair Rooney Mara (who else?). Of course both were outfitted in the brand, with Rooney in a white hand-embroidered tulle dress with gold zippers worn with white nappa leather shark-lock sandals. Hot!
Karolina Kurkova donned a Mary Katranztou one shouldered minidress, with thick black eyeliner and an edgy slickback to boot. Loving the colors here. Hot!
You gotta hand it to Sarah Jessica Parker: she consistently comes correct on the red carpet. This time, the actress donned a Phillip Treacy mohawk headpiece, with a Giles Deacon gown and patterned Christian Louboutin boots.
Bee Shaffer accompanied her mum Anna Wintour to the festivities. Bee wore Dior and Anna Wintourkept it snoozeworthy in Chanel Couture. Looks like they missed the ‘punk’ memo.
Alicia Keys chose this custom Jason Wu number for the night. I like the leather top, but I’m at a loss with the sequined skirt. Hmm..something seems terribly disjointed here, no? Perhaps all leather would have worked.
Naomie Harris was a vision in a purple Donna Karan Atelier gown. Gorgeous frock, but the look is reminding me a little of Beyoncé’s Givenchy moment last year…
Anja Rubik‘s blood red Anthony Vaccarello leather look kept to the theme of the night. I approve.
Lala Anthony also opted for red in a slinky Zac Posen number. The fit in the bust is unfortunate and I’m failing to see the punk inspiration. Hmm…better luck next time, Lala!
New York Giants star receiver Victor Cruz accompanied girlfriend Elaina Watley in a Lanvin tuxedo.Elaina looked pretty fab herself in a Naeem Khan beaded look and Jimmy Choo sandals. Hot couple!
Taylor Swift was as punky as she’ll ever be in J. Mendel.
Chanel Iman also opted for J. Mendel, and made a splash in a black and white striped organza gown with asymmetrical drape. Two toned hair and braided sides completed her look.
Miley Cyrus offset her porcupine coif with a mesh Marc Jacobs gown. Hmm…don’t mind the hair, but I was hoping for more from Miley.
Katy Perry fancied herself a queen in this bedazzled Dolce & Gabbana runway piece, topped with a crown. Hmmm…love the look and dark lips, but her makeup is trying for Queen of the Damned but giving Twilight: New Moon.
Actual queen Kerry Washington put her own elegant spin on the night’s theme in a purple Vera Wang gown. She furnished her look with Olivia Pope-approved long leather gloves, and purple streaks in her hair. SURPRISE- another perfectly-executed look from Ms. Washington.
I feel like Rita Ora skewed a bit safe in this white Thakoon dress. Pretty, but I feel she does ‘punk’ much better in her everyday ensembles. Still, this is her first time at the Gala, and she’ll have many more turns down the red carpet!
Madonna rocked the theme to a tee in Givenchy Haute Couture. This is how you do it, children. Work!
Perhaps Nicki Minaj‘s Tommy Hilfiger look was the most punk rock of the night, as it was alarmingly plain. Subversive! The American Idol judge and reformed oddball took the red carpet in one of her most subdued looks yet. Was this intentional?
Anne Hathaway was completely transformed in a racy vintage Valentino beaded gown and cropped platinum blonde bouffant. This might be the edgiest we’ve ever seen Ms. Hathaway! Hot!
Christina Ricci tried a Vivienne Westwood tartan print frock on for size, using the hi-lo hem to show off her fishnets. This is a great look, but the hair is a little too pretty. Stick straight locks or an edgy updo might have worked better here. Hot look, however!
Kate Bosworth a.k.a the luckiest woman in the room, arrived at the side of Balmain‘s Olivier Rousteing. She certainly did his designs justice!
Gwen Stefani also lived up to the theme, but in her own rocker way in Maison Martin Margiela. With abs like hers, just about anything looks hot!
