Gunmen shot dead six traffic policemen in the central city of Salamanca on Friday. Authorities call this one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in recent months.
The six policemen are conducting routine checks when they are attacked. Guillermo Maldonado, a senior official in the city of Salamanca, said in a broadcast on Mexican television that the motive for daytime attacks was unclear.
Televisa said that at least three gunmen in a white vehicle fired on unarmed victims. After carrying out the action all the perpetrators immediately escaped from the scene.
Separately, the Reforma newspaper and broadcaster Milenio said that five people had been shot dead in the municipality of Leonardo Bravo in the southwestern state of Guerrero. State security spokesman Roberto Alvarez said the five were members of a family.
