new report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies
assesses that NATO would not be helpless in the face of the threat of
one of Russia's most sophisticated nuclear submarine, K-560 Yasen-class
Severodvinsk. This report mentions the readiness of NATO's anti-submarine warfare (ASW) deteriorated.
SEPA submarine K-560 is one of Russia's most advanced submarines. Equipped with advanced noise reduction and electronic warfare equipment, the submarine is also armed with long-range missiles, cruise missiles and anti-ship torpedo missiles. Ship K-560 can also be sped up to 35 knots.
"The organization, relationships, intelligence, and ability to ever support a strong network of ASW (NATO) in the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea no longer exist," the report said.
"Two things have happened," said naval historian, Norman Polmer, told Defense News. "First, submarines (Russia) calmer, and secondly, we have to take most of our ASW capabilities," he added, quoted on Wednesday (27/07/2016).
The report recommends that all NATO countries should contribute to increase the ability of anti-submarine, in particular Britain, which is the ability of his Navy has decreased significantly in recent years.
"British Navy might be at the point of lowest ebb," the report says referring to the last British patrol aircraft carrier in 2014.
